Celebrities from Rihanna to Helen Mirren look to Georges Chakra to make them look and feel spectacular on their most glamorous occasions. How does the designer manage to make so many different women look like his gowns were made-to-measure, just for them? Chakra took a few moments out of his busy couture week preparations to tell Dia what goes into a starry appearance.
Thanks for making time to speak with us during your hectic week! Let’s get right into it—how do celebrities choose your gowns?
We work with a PR company that has relationships with the stylists. The stylists select what they like and what they think the celebrity will like, and then the celebrity does a selection of the selection…. If the stylist doesn’t say exactly what they want, they can explain the mood or the style they wish to achieve. The more we work with the stylist and the celebrity, the more accurate our suggestions become. We’ve worked on several occasions with Queen Latifah, Emily Blunt and Carrie Underwood, so we can instantly tell that a dress is Carrie’s style, or that Queen Latifah is going to like this dress.
Do you know when a celebrity is going to wear a Georges Chakra dress, or is it a surprise?
Sometimes we know—sometimes it’s almost sure. But most of the time, we’re not 100% sure. There’s always an element of surprise to the matter. Like when Helen Mirren chose one of our gowns for the Oscars—Helen was presenting the Best Actress Oscar that night, and we knew she was choosing between several gowns, including two or three of ours. She finally chose a theatrical red satin gown. We just sat in front of the television, waiting for her to appear on the red carpet. The surprise was very, very rewarding.
What has been the most exciting event or occasion you’ve seen one of your dresses worn to?
Most of them! When I’m watching the celebrity going on stage, or seeing the picture, I forget for a second that it was my dress. I look at it just as a designer, seeing it from an objective point of view, and it makes me see how wonderful it is. I fall in love with the dress all over again, and the celebrity wearing the dress, because she makes the dress come to life.
Who would you most like to see in a Georges Chakra dress, who hasn’t already worn one?
I like celebrities that have character, that have their own personality. As long as they add something to the dress!
What are some of the red carpet trends we can expect to see over the next season?
The upcoming collection has a lot of gold, grey, lilac, green, and rich browns. Vintage designs are a great source of inspiration. Fabrics will be warm, comforting and thoughtful.”
