Interview with Fashion Illustrator Janelle Burger

Category: Interview
Fashion fanatics worldwide enjoy viewing the creative process behind the conception of a designer’s collection. Just take a look at the books designers place on the seats of their runway shows, for visitors to understand the inspiration behind it, and you’ll understand the fascination.

One of the most interesting and beautiful things about the process is the illustrations the designers create before the inception of the product. And while that itself is a wonderful thing, it is equally wonderful to view the end product, drawn with unique hands like those of artist Janelle Burger.
France-based freelance photographer and fashion illustrator Janelle Burger is well on her way to becoming a very successful artist. If you are not familiar with her work, she creates the most darling fashion-inspired illustrations of models and clothing. Although she focuses on those mainly, she loves including one of her other passions: food. Ironic, maybe, but oh so clever!

After being taught by her father at age four on how to draw the female form, the 27 year old Janelle has yet to stop. She began to focus more on fashion illustration earlier this year, and has since established a blog where she posts her work, as well as opening up an Etsy shop where she sells her artwork. Favoring ink and pencils as her favorite mediums of work, Janelle has recently been introducing watercolors to her creations as well.

Following her studies in design and fine art, Janelle had stints in freelance jobs, and credits Fashion Week in Paris as one of the most lucrative times where she gets most of her work. “This year I went to a lot of fashion shows during fashion week and it inspired me a lot so that’s why I’ve drawn a lot of fashion pieces,” says Janelle. “I also like to draw cakes and cats.” She adds.

It seems odd that people of such talent are usually hidden from the public eye, and as soon as they’re discovered everyone wonders why they haven’t heard of them before. “Some of my friends started up Tumblr accounts for their own projects and I just started one and put up my drawings… Then all of a sudden people started following me and the rest is history…” explains Janelle of her recognition. “Before that it was just friends and family seeing my art.”  Adding to her growing recognition, Janelle says “I Google searched myself. You should never do that but I wanted to see if anyone wrote about me… I saw people from Japan writing about my art and from that moment I thought YES, if I can reach anyone in Japan that makes me a happy girl.”
